Oil Cleansing in Ayurveda: Why I Finally Understood What My Grandmother Meant

My grandmother used to massage oil into her face every night before bed. As a teenager, I thought this was the grossest thing imaginable. Why would you put oil on your face? Didn't oil cause breakouts? Wasn't the goal to remove oil from your skin?

It took me years of studying herbalism and working as an esthetician to understand that my grandmother was practicing one of the most effective skincare methods ever developed.

What oil cleansing actually does

The principle is simple: like dissolves like. Oil dissolves the oils on your skin, including makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. But unlike harsh cleansers that strip everything away, oil cleansing maintains your skin's natural barrier.

When I first learned this in my esthetician training, I was skeptical. I had been taught that oil was the enemy. But when I started recommending oil cleansing to clients with problematic skin, their skin improved dramatically.

Why Ayurveda has been doing this for thousands of years

In Ayurveda, oil is considered medicine. Different oils have different therapeutic properties. Sesame oil is warming and grounding. Coconut oil is cooling and antimicrobial. Each oil affects your skin and your constitution differently.

My grandmother wasn't just removing makeup. She was giving herself daily medicine through her skin. The oils she chose supported her dosha and addressed her specific skin needs.

My own oil cleansing evolution

When I first tried oil cleansing, I made every mistake possible. I used coconut oil (too comedogenic for my skin). I didn't emulsify properly (left residue). I expected instant results (took weeks to see the benefits).

But when I finally got it right, using a blend of oils that worked for my skin type, the difference was dramatic. My skin was cleaner than it had ever been, but also softer and more balanced.

Why the oil blend matters

Single oils rarely work as well as oil blends. Different oils have different molecular weights and different properties. A good cleansing oil combines oils that dissolve makeup with oils that nourish skin.

When I formulated SILK, I thought about what each oil contributed. Castor oil for deep cleansing. Hazelnut oil for quick absorption. Frankincense for healing. Black cumin for clarifying. Each oil has a job to do.

The ritual aspect

Oil cleansing forces you to slow down. You can't rush the process. You have to massage the oil in, let it work, then rinse it off properly. This mindful approach to cleansing is as important as the oils themselves.

My grandmother's nightly oil massage wasn't just skincare. It was stress relief, self-care, and meditation all at once. She was taking care of her mind and spirit while she took care of her skin.

Common oil cleansing mistakes I see

People try oil cleansing once and give up. They use the wrong oils for their skin type. They don't massage long enough or rinse thoroughly. They expect their skin to adjust overnight.

Oil cleansing works, but it requires patience and the right approach. Your skin needs time to adjust if you've been using harsh cleansers. The right oil blend for your skin type makes all the difference.

What I tell people who are afraid of oil cleansing

Start slowly. Use a pre-made oil cleanser instead of trying to blend your own. Give it at least two weeks before you decide if it's working. And remember that clean skin shouldn't feel tight or stripped.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, oil cleansing might be exactly what you need. Harsh cleansers often make oily skin worse by triggering more oil production. Oil cleansing can help balance your skin's natural oil levels.

Why my grandmother was right

Traditional wisdom exists for a reason. Oil cleansing has been practiced for thousands of years because it works. My grandmother understood something that modern skincare is just rediscovering: your skin needs oil to be healthy.

I wish I could tell her that her weird nightly ritual inspired the most popular product in my skincare line. She was ahead of her time, or maybe the rest of us are just catching up to timeless wisdom.
